Seq. 00 · Dramatis personae

One lemon, and the company he keeps.

Every job here tells the same short: somebody has an idea, there is a gap between it and the real thing, and problems swarm in the middle. These are the players. You will meet them in the margins of every page.

SC. 00Group portrait of the SmartLemon cast: a big cartoon lemon with arms spread, a small lightbulb character at his feet, a tin robot, a moustached cash register, an ink bottle and a paint pot, a spider on a thread, grumpy grapes in a theatre box, and four ink-blot gremlins underfoot.
ACTION: Everyone holds still for the studio photograph. The Smudges do not. The Grapes have notes.
pencil = still in production. paint = it shipped.
Seq. 01 · The players

Four characters tell every story on this site.

DWG 01SmartLemon, a rubber-hose cartoon lemon with white gloves, standing with one hand on his hip and the other raised in a friendly salute.
The lead

SmartLemon

The builder, and the name on the door. Curious, unhurried, rolls up sleeves he does not have. Whatever the story, his job is the same: get the thing across the gap.

The Tin Robot

Does exactly what he is wound to do, and not one thing more. Left alone he marches straight off the bench. Pointed somewhere useful, he never gets tired.

The Idea

The founder is never drawn. What gets drawn is the idea: small, fragile, excitable, always one step from wandering into the gap. Dim in scene one. Full brightness in the final print.

The Smudges

Bugs, broken integrations, the spreadsheet that ate a weekend. They live on the paper and arrive in swarms, because problems do. Good news: they erase.

Ink & Paint

A double act. Ink is tall, fussy, and insists on clean lines. Paint is short, cheerful, and gets it everywhere. You will only ever see them in colour, on finished work.

Pencil means in progress · Paint means it shipped

Painted cel of a tall ink bottle character with a dip pen glaring at a cheerful brick-red paint pot who is flicking sky-blue paint everywhere.
Seq. 02 · Featured players

The Director

TO: ALL DEPTS.RE: THE DIRECTOR

The Director is never drawn. No caricature, no cameo, no hand entering frame. He appears only as red pencil on the boards and notes in the margin. If you can read this, you have already met him.

that’s me. hello.↙ blue is me thinking. red is me deciding.
